Aggies can claim outright WAC title with win over Broncos

Off to their best start in school history at an incredible 24-1, the Aggies secured at least a share of the league title on Thursday night with their 62-53 victory versus Idaho in Moscow. The decision was the 19th in a row to go in favor of USU, continuing the nation's longest current win streak in the process. At this point the Aggies have also won 16 consecutive conference battles dating back to last season, giving the program the longest such streak in the WAC since Utah posted 19 wins in a row between 1997-99.

As for the Broncos, a team that has lost just once at home in 12 games this season, they last played on Monday night versus Fresno State at the Save Mart Center and were turned away in an 88-82 final. The loss snapped a brief two- game win streak by Boise State, which is now 6-4 in conference and alone in third place heading into the weekend.

Needless to say, with an unblemished conference mark this season, the Aggies already have one victory over Boise State, posting a 79-65 victory in Logan back on January 17th. With that win, USU now leads the all-time series between the programs by a count of 22-7.

Gary Wilkinson, who on Monday was named the WAC Player of the Week, played up to his billing on Thursday night as he registered a double-double against Idaho at the Cowan Spectrum. Wilkinson finished the contest with 18 points and 10 rebounds, shooting a near-perfect 9-of-10 at the free-throw line for the squad. Jared Quayle added 12 points as the Aggies made it through with just 40.5 percent shooting from the floor. Wilkins has been huge in the paint for the Aggies with his team-best 17.3 ppg and 7.5 rpg. But more than that, his 60.2 percent shooting from the field has given opponents plenty of reason to take their shots at the big man and he has responded. Wilkinson has also shown great touch at the free-throw line where he is 84.8 percent accurate (123- of-145) which is much better than the group's overall accuracy of 7.8 percent these days. As a team, USU is one of the best in the nation at shooting the ball from the field, hitting at an impressive 50.3 percent clip over the course of 25 games.

Kurt Cunningham dialed up a team-best 20 points on Monday night, shooting 10- of-17 from the floor, but it wasn't enough as the Broncos fell to Fresno State on the road. Paul Noonan accounted for 17 points, La'Shard Anderson 15 off the bench, while Mark Sanchez registered a double-double consisting of 10 points and 11 rebounds in the setback as well. More than anything else, the biggest hurdle for the Broncos came at the free-throw line where they were a mere 7- of-10, compared to 27-of-31 for the home team. A starter in 21 of the team's 23 games this season, Sanchez leads the unit in both scoring and rebounding with averages of 12.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest, shooting a solid 50 percent from the field in the process. Noonan checks in with 11.0 ppg and Cunningham another 10.0 ppg as he ranks among the nation's top shooters at 69.2 percent from the floor. However, when it comes to conference play, not one of the three aforementioned performers is averaging double-digit points, leaving Anthony Thomas as the only one in that category with his 10.3 ppg.
