Henin, Sharapova reach French Open semis

06/05/2007 - Paris, France (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Top-ranked Belgian Justine Henin and second-seeded Russian Maria Sharapova secured berths in the semifinals at the French Open by winning their quarterfinal matches in convincing fashion on Tuesday.

In a highly-anticipated showdown, the top-seeded Henin whipped eighth- seeded and former world No. 1 American Serena Williams 6-4, 6-3. Henin is now 2-0 against Williams all-time at the French Open. Back in 2003, the Belgian also prevailed over the American in a semifinal match at Roland Garros.

Henin improved to 4-6 lifetime against Williams. The American star overcame her Belgian counterpart in a marquee final in Miami earlier this season.

Williams owns eight major titles, including one at the Australian Open back in January and her lone French Open crown in 2002.

The diminutive Henin is a five-time Grand Slam champion, including three French Open titles in the last four years. She's won the last two French Opens, including a victory over Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova in last year's finale.

Henin's semifinal opponent will be fourth-seeded Serbian Jelena Jankovic, who dropped sixth-seeded Czech Nicole Vaidisova 6-3, 7-5 on Day 10. Jankovic has won three of her last four matches against Vaidisova and is now 3-4 lifetime against the Czech slugger.

Sharapova downed her ninth-seeded fellow Russian Anna Chakvetadze 6-3, 6-4 to improve to 4-0 lifetime against her countrywoman, including a win in the Aussie Open quarters back in January. Sharapova also beat Chakvetadze here in Paris two years ago.

Next up for Sharapova is a match against seventh-seeded Serbian Ana Ivanovic, who stunned the a third-seeded Kuznetsova 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 on Tuesday to reach her first-ever Grand Slam semi.

The former U.S. Open champion Kuznetsova is now 1-3 all-time against Ivanovic, including a setback in a final in Berlin just last month.

The 20-year-old Sharapova is a two-time major titlist and has appeared in the last two Grand Slam finals. She prevailed at last year's U.S. Open and was routed by Williams in this year's Aussie Open title affair.

The semifinals will be held here on Thursday, with the winners to meet in the lucrative final on Saturday. Semifinal victories by Jankovic and Ivanovic would produce a first-ever all-Serbian Grand Slam final.
