Nadal, Djokovic land in French quarters

06/04/2007 - Paris, France (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Reigning two-time defending champion Rafael Nadal and sixth-seeded Serbian Novak Djokovic were a pair of straight- set fourth-round winners Monday at the French Open.

The second-seeded Nadal rolled past former world No. 1 Aussie Lleyton Hewitt 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) for his 85th victory in his last 86 matches on red clay, including 18 straight wins at Roland Garros.

Nadal and the 14th-seeded Hewitt battled for 71 minutes in the third set before the Spaniard finally moved on, which he did with the help of six service breaks on Day 9.

The determined Nadal is now 3-4 lifetime against Hewitt, who also lost to the Spaniard in the fourth round here last year. Nadal also beat Hewitt in a semifinal in Hamburg just last month.

Hewitt is a two-time major titlist and has reached every Grand Slam final except for the French, where he's never advanced beyond the quarterfinals.

The powerful Nadal, who beat Swiss superstar Roger Federer in last year's French Open finale, is trying to become the first man to win three straight French Opens since the great Bjorn Borg won four in a row from 1978-81.

Nadal's quarterfinal opponent will be his fellow Mallorcan, good friend and former mentor, 30-year-old Carlos Moya. Nadal just celebrated his 21st birthday here on Sunday.

The 20-year-old Miami Masters champion Djokovic got past Spanish lefthander Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) on the second Monday of this fortnight. Djokovic piled up nine aces and four breaks, while Verdasco committed a whopping 52 unforced errors in the predictable setback.

Djokovic, who also reached the French Open quarters last year before losing to the amazing Nadal, will battle tough Russian Igor Andreev here on Wednesday.

The hard-hitting Andreev continued his solid run here with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 victory over 16th-seeded Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis, the 2006 Australian Open runner-up. Andreev piled up seven breaks on Day 9, compared to four for the loser Baghdatis, who hadn't dropped a set here until Monday.

The 23-year-old Andreev beat third-seeded American Andy Roddick in the opening round last week.

The veteran Moya is a surprise quarterfinalist here, as the former French Open champ doused fellow veteran Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, 7-5. Moya prevailed despite committing 46 unforced errors and nine double faults. He did, however, break Bjorkman's serve six times.

The 23rd-seeded Spanish Moya is a former world No. 1 who captured this Grand Slam event in 1998. The 35-year-old Bjorkman was the oldest player still standing in Paris.
